An Investigation of PLZT for Integrated Optics.

A study of using the lanthanum modified lead zirconate-lead titanate ceramics PLZT for integrated optics applications was undertaken. Significant research results obtained to date can be summarized as follows 1 The optical quality including the optical adsorption and scattering and the electro-optic properties of PLZT were measured. These results indicate that PLZT is suitable for integrated optics applications. 2 Epitaxial growth of PLZT thin films was obtained by chemical vapor transport and liquid phase epitaxy. The physical dimension of the films must be increased to allow waveguiding and the intended applications. 3 The refractive index of PLZT is strongly dependent on the La content and the ZrTi ratio. This makes the medium suitable for the in-diffusion or out-diffusion technique to achieve refractive index modification for waveguiding. Author
