Abstract:

Research was performed to classify reasons for Army enlistment, and identify factors associated with enlistment in the Army or another Service. Data from two samples of FY72 Army enlistees were subjected to factor analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis techniques to generate a four-way classification of reasons for enlistment vocational development, enlistment in the Service of ones choice Army at the time of ones choice, individual development and change, and military personnel benefits, including the G.I. Bill. The two factors most influential were educational level and race.
