Abstract:
No materials available when this research was performed were useful for 10.6-micron laser windows at the power levels and beam diameters of interest. Some available materials were too weak structurally, whereas other, strong enough, tended to distort the beam when they absorbed its heat. This report discusses the problems and the physical principles underlying them. It sets up guidelines for the search for, and the selection of, suitable materials. Then, by using these guidelines and the figures of merit already established, along with the known properties of a few materials, the author isolates a narrow choice of materials for early experimental investigation.
