Abstract:
The present work is concerned with the chemical dissolution of water in glass and its subsequent effect upon properties and molecular structure. The specific objective was to determine whether protons introduced into a glass from chemically dissolved water were responsible for the mechanical damping internal friction peaks widely reported in alkali containing glasses. The present work was confined to an examination of glasses of the lowest possible proton water content. The glass compositions studied were NaPO3, 33.3 Na2O.66.7 SiO2 and 25 Na2O.75 SiO2, mole percent.
