Abstract:

The constant false alarm rate CFAR detection of known-form or Gaussian signals in Gaussian noise of unknown level leads to the use of ratio-type detectors that are invariant to received signal level. In the known-form case the distribution of the detector statistic is t-distributed and detection performance can be easily obtained from published t-Tables. In the Gaussian signal case, the distribution of the detector statistic cannot, in general, be obtained in closed form. Thus for general applicability of the detector, numerical studies must be carried out to determine experimentally the distribution of the statistic and the corresponding probability of false alarm. In the paper experimental distributions and performance characteristics are obtained for the detection of RC, bandlimited, and triangular-covariance Gaussian signals in white Gaussian noise WGN.
