Abstract:

It is well known that the buckling stress of flat rectangular plates subjected to compression in the longitudinal direction can be increased through the application of tension in the transverse direction. The purpose of the present investigation is to find out whether a similar effect exists in the case of circular cylindrical shells. It has also been known that the application of internal pressure has a stabilizing effect on axially compressed circular cylindrical shells. However, this effect is less strong than the one mentioned in connection with the flat plate it does not increase the experimental buckling stress above the classical theoretical value, it only eliminates the deletorious effect of initial inaccuracies in the manufacture of the shell. These inaccuracies very often reduce the experimental buckling stress to 25 to 50 percent of the theoretical value. Modified author abstract
