Abstract:

The mechanism of load transfer between the layers of a fiber-reinforced composite laminate of finite width is investigated by methods of classical elasticity. The finite- difference technique was employed to obtain numerical solutions of the governing equations of elasticity. Two modes of interlaminar load transfer are identified. The response of the general laminate is investigated, and the influence and interaction of the two load transfer modes are determined. Variables considered in the study include stacking sequence, laminate geometry, material properties, and fiber orientation. Characteristics of the finite- difference solution procedure are investigated, and methods are developed for study of convergence of the numerical solutions. Employing the insight gained by the results of the investigation, expressions for the 6average6 interlaminar stresses as a function of material properties and laminate geometry are developed for consideration in the design of a finite width laminate subjected to extensional loads.
