The report describes work and results of studies made to determine similarities and differences of helium and neon as breathing gases for diving, studies into the etiology of decompression sickness, and premonitory methods for its detection. The authors have investigated in vivo nitrogen and helium uptake and elimination in rat and rabbit leg muscle by mass spectrometry, ultrasound techniques, and gas bubble distributions in the major vessels of rats following helium or nitrogen diving.
