Abstract:

An exact expression for the probability of success runs with Bernoulli trails has been developed which is equivalent to Fellers approximation but does not have the constraints applicable to the approximate solution. Examples of applying the success-run expression are estimation of the design requirements for detection systems whose performance is specified by the probability of obtaining a sequence of consecutive detections over an observation span, computation of the performance of miltiline barriers for obtaining the direction of target transit, computation of the reliability for barriers or parallel systems of any size, and classification of sources as targets and nontargets in regions of high false-alarm backgrounds. The results also extend to include Markov-dependent Bernoulli trials, applicable to detection trials in which alerting occurs. Author
