The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of upgrading fire protection of older aircraft hangars by using aqueous film forming foam AFFF in the existing circa 1940 water deluge systems. The Light Water3 brand of AFFF was discharged through a 48-head deluge system 60 ft above a fire or through a water powered oscillating turret nozzle at floor level. The amount of improvement derived from such retrofitting would seem to equal or exceed the improvement derived from other modes of upgrading protein foam deluge system or improved water supply at a similar or lower cost. This judgment is made on the basis that neither a change in head type nor an increase in pressure would be required. Modified author abstract
