Abstract:

In the first part of a two-part report the interaction of finite size beams of light and sound is investigated by means of an integral formulation of the diffraction problem. The integral equations are derived from Maxwells equations and are shown to have a physical interpretation which relates to the reradiation from induced dipole sources. The analysis is conducted for several useful cases involving Gaussian andor uniform beam profiles, resulting in general expressions for the first-order diffracted fields and power. These results are investigated in terms of the geometric parameters of the system and also with respect to the acoustic frequency. A generalized picture of the interaction is obtained by which critera for the observance of the so-called different types of diffraction are precisely defined. Some discussion of the optical response to modulated sound waves is given, but more thorough analysis of this problem is reserved for Part II. The analytical work is supplemented by physical arguments and interpretations in an attempt to present a full picture of the interaction. Author
