Human and dog red cells stored for six weeks in high concentrations of adenine equivalent to 25 or 50 mgkg body weight were found to show decreased pH, P50, and diphosphoglycerate DPG levels comparable to other studies. A decrease in adenosine triphosphates ATP with storage was observed however, there was a higher level with greater adenine doses indicating support of the ATP level by the adenine. No signs of toxic effects from the high adenine doses were observed. Author
