Abstract:

The objectives of this contract were to investigate the possibility of a CO chain reaction chemical laser based on O2 CS chemistry and to model various schemes, particularly gas dynamic expansion, for extracting more power from CO chemical lasers. The direct reaction of O2 CS was investigated experimentally. Measurements of the vibrational energy distribution of CO from the CS O2 reaction with a Fabry-Perot microwave resonatorCO chemical laser system were also part of the effort on the first objective. The second effort involved the CO chemical laser modeling code developed under a previous MICOM contract. This computer program was modified to include the cooling effects of gas dynamic expansion through a supersonic nozzle on chemically-formed CO. Both nozzle-cooled and non-nozzle-cooled chemical lasers were modeled. The modeling code was further modified to determine the effect of gas additives on the laser output characteristics.
