Abstract:

Theoretical and empirical considerations point to the possibility of different abilities being involved in solving verbal as opposed to pictorial analogies, thereby throwing into question the notion of a single analogical reasoning ability. Line-drawing pictures were drawn to represent common 4th grade level words in a word-pair list being used in this project. The pictures were shown to 9th and 10th grade students, who were asked to identify them. Modal responses were determined for use in developing parallel word and picture analogy tests. The report presents significant sex, race, social class defined by reported family income and geographic location differences found in modal response given to the pictures. Modified author abstract
