Abstract:
The mechanisms of failure of unidirectional composites were studied under combined stresses. The effects of fiber and matrix constitutive behavior, statistics of fiber strength, and fiber-matrix interface characteristics on composite strength were studied. The salient features of lamina strength under axial tensionaxial shear were determined. Examples are given for boronepoxy and glassepoxy. An exploratory axial sheartransverse tensiontransverse shear using upper bound limit analysis techniques was performed as a means of estimating the effects of interlaminar stresses on composite failure.
