Abstract:

The object of this study was to determine the feasibility of substituting tolyltriazole TT for mercaptobenzothiazole MBT in the corrosion inhibitor package used in military coolants. ASTM Glassware Corrosion Tests D 1384 and Simulated Service Tests D 2570 were conducted on various blends of antifreeze inhibitors with different percentages of sodium tolyltriazole NaTT. The NaTT caused foaming in the tests, but a silicone type antifoam agent was found which controlled the foaming. Results of these tests were correlated with similar tests containing the amount of MBT recommended in coolant specifications 0.4 of the sodium salt. 0.15 was found to be the optimum percentage of NaTT.
