Abstract:

The essay investigates the military implications, within the 1970-2000 timeframe, of oceanographic studies. Recent research has revealed extensive resources in and under the sea. Techniques of movement and life in the sea have hastened the extension of military operations to great depths. Consideration of the undersea as an object of war, of methods of warfare, of military applications of non-military techniques, and of the strategic and tactical significance of oceanographic data indicates that undersea operations at least capable of denying control of the undersea by potential enemies is vital to the future national security of the United States.
