Abstract:
In an attempt to study the possible connections between upper and lower atmospheric electricity, the restricted boundary-value problem of self-consistent electrostatic field mapping in the collision-dominated lower ionosphere is solved. It is found that, while the exact lower boundary value is unknown, the perpendicular field maps through the ionosphere with little change. The parallel field associated with the perpendicular solutions are generally 0.001-0.0001 that of the perpendicular field above 150 km however, below 150 km, the two fields are of comparable magnitude. Magnetospheric electricity may contribute to the value of the high-latitude vertical field at mesopheric heights, since Eparallel is comparable to Eperpendicular at the bottomside ionosphere. Author
