Abstract:

The study examined the extent to which the decision process used by a group, the overall diversity of opinion within a group, and the relative similarity between individual and group goals determined subjective reactions to and subsequent behavioral support of group decisions. It was found that the major determinant subjective reactions to the decisions and subsequent behavioral support accorded these decisions was the concordance of opinion within the group. The decision rule used by a group did not have any impact on the subjective ratings of satisfaction individuals reported from the group decisions, but it did have an impact on the support accorded these decisions. The relative similarity between an individuals preferences and those of his group also influenced the reported satisfaction with the group decision and the extent to which an individual changed his preferences to agree with the group decision. There was no direct relationship between the degree of preference change toward the group decision and subsequent behavioral support, however. Differential reactions to decisions by majority and minority coalition members within groups under each decision process were noted. Modified author abstract
