The project attempts to elucidate some of the factors involved in the onset of certain types of autoimmune degeneration, particularly as related to oral cavity tissue. This study has followed two general lines of investigation. In the first was studied the effect on tissues of Swiss white mice and Holtzman strain rats of introducing into the animal, large quantities of single amino acids via intraperitoneal injection. The second and more recent aspect dealt with the role of lysosomal enzymes in modifying the structure of collagen and connective tissue thereby creating the antigenicity responsible for the onset of autoimmune degeneration.
