Abstract:
The effect of the size and shape of the molten core as well as the width of the transition zone on the reflection of ultrasound off the phase transition boundary during melting was studied. The amplitude of the ultrasonic signal reflected off the core depends on the width of the transition zone and, to a lesser extent, on the shape of the core. For slightly thermoconductive materials with a sharp phae transition boundary for example, Kh18N9T steel the signal reflected from the molten core is commensurate with the signal relfected from an air cavity of similar dimensions. In highly thermoconductive materials ultrasound reflection from the core is considerably weaker.
