Abstract:

Two locations were studied--one in California at the Stanford Linear Accelerator site and one at Table Rock Dam on the White River in Missouri--to gain an understanding of the forces and influences that act on a precise surveying system, to attempt to identify the cause of detrimental influences, and to investigate the feasibility of minimizing these influences in practical applications. Light path behavior was studied. The effects of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, and fog on light paths were determined. The effects of elevation on survey lines, length of line, and laser output were also studied. Modified author abstract
