It is indicated that electrochemical techniques, used either singly or in combination with other surface techniques, are extremely useful in studying a variety of embrittlement and corrosion phenomena. For example, using the techniques of cathodic polarization and Auger spectroscopy, the authors have shown an association between the hydrogen embrittlement of nickel and segregated impurities. Also, the technique of potentiostatic polarization has facilitated the development of our understanding of the microstructural factors important in the mechanism of crack propagation in high strength aluminum alloys.
