Abstract:

A revision of conventional representations of acoustic fields produced by a point source in a stratified medium seawater is undertaken. Innovations include a a model of point sources based on analytic continuations of the conventional delta functions, b the use of this concept to evaluate mode excitation functions through a complete expansion of the source function, c a derivation of normal modes of propagation as field functions representing the response to individual excitation functions, d interpretation in terms of transmission line theory.
