The study examines popular support for police actions during periods of urban violence and how to achieve support. The forces of law and order, police or troops, use various techniques to win this support but one powerful and basic trait of human nature is not sufficiently exploited. This trait is human selfishness or self-interest. The essay examines the significance of this trait and possible circumstances under which it can be used.
