In 1880 Bvt MG Emory Upton stated that the excellence of the volunteer soldiers during the Civil War was not due to the fact that they were volunteers, but to the more important fact that their long term of service had made them regulars, in the highest sense, in drill, discipline, and courage. The objective of the study is to test the validity of the statement. An allied question deals with the factors which caused some volunteer regiments to reenlist while other regiments mustered-out of the service at the expiration of their three-year term.
