Abstract:

Under the sponsorship of the grant, work was undertaken in the theory of 1 Field Emission, 2 Single Particle Tunneling in Thin Junctions, 3 Many-body Theory of Tunneling. In work on high field emission of electrons, it was demonstrated that one-dimensional analysis should only be considered as qualitative guides. A full three-dimensional analysis while much more difficult and time-consuming is probably necessary for a complete quantitative exploitation of experimental observation. A single particle theory of tunneling was developed by means of a generalization of the WKB approximation to potentials which asymptotically tend to a periodic rather than to a constant function of position. A many particle theory of tunneling, avoiding the transfer Hamiltonian formalism, was developed. The theory clarifies the significance of the transfer Hamiltonian. It also differs in its detailed predictions from current formulations. Author
