Abstract:

Computer simulation studies have been made to optimize the design of a tripod mooring to be deployed in 6 km depth of water for the study of central ocean internal waves. The sensitivity of mooring excursions to cable buoyancy, apex buoyancy, cable size and leg inclination are examined along with variations in current velocity magnitude and direction and the drag coefficients. Comparison of mooring excursions and costs yielded a candidate design for detailed study and simulation later. The techniques and results of the computer simulation that led to the candidate design are described. Modified author abstract
