Abstract:
The application of the flowing afterglow technique, developed in National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA with Defense Nuclear Agency DNA support, to the measurement of atmospheric ion-neutral reactions has continued to be the major effort of the group. A number of significant results, essential to the understanding of the normal and disturbed ionospheres, have been obtained. The technique has been extended in the temperature range over which it operates and a new combined flowing afterglow-drift tube combination has been put in operation which closes the energy gap between thermal measurements and beam measurements.
