During FY 1972, the Army Materiel Command established a program to model predictively the signature of targets and backgrounds in the optical portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. One phase of this program addresses the reflective optical signature for natural sources of irradiation. This report describes one part of this effort, an attempt to predict the magnitudes of some of the relevant irradiation sources. The approach followed was to modify a previously developed single-scattering radiative transfer model to incorporate multiple scattering. The predictions from the revised model and an empirical model were then compared with extensive luminance measurements of the sun, sky, and a black panel for a wide variety of geometric and environmental conditions. A detailed discussion of the errors and their sources is included. Author
