The report describes the conceptual studies and design of a nonpropelled Container Discharge Facility CDF equipped with auxiliary maneuvering propulsion and one large gantry crane. It has as its primary and secondary missions, respectively, the discharge of containers from nonself-sustaining containerships and the discharge of general cargo from general cargo and special purpose ships to lighterage or other modes of air andor waterborne transport in Logistics-Over-The-Shore LOTS type operations. The scope of the report was restricted to the phase of offloading the cargo, primarily containers, from ships offshore onto lighterage including displacement hulls, rigid sidewall air lubricated barges, amphibians, air cushion vehicles and helicopters.
