The observation and quantitative measurement of optical heterodyne detection in the far infrared Lambda 118.6 micrometers using a GeGa detector are reported. The experimental results fall below theoretical predictions the discrepancy is explained in terms of the NEP of the detector used and the low value of local oscillator power available in the experiments.
