Abstract:

The purpose of the study is to examine the development of dissent and protest movements in the Soviet Union since 1954. The paper concentrates on the role of dissenting Soviet writers since much of the speculation in the West about future changes in the Soviet system is based on their actions and achievements. Emphasis is placed on the origin, character, and aims of the writers efforts as a group. Based on the Soviet regimes reaction to the writers efforts, the study concludes that the prospects for protest efforts achieving a freer Soviet society in the foreseeable future are poor. Author
