Abstract:

Both encapsulated liquid crystals and thermography are capable of detecting flaws in coalescer elements in the form of voids, split seams, end cap cracks, separated end cap seals, epoxy filled voids and material imperfections. Limited nondestructive tests conducted on coalescers purchased independently from Three manufacturers and coalescers received from naval air stations because of service problems showed approximately 25 to be defective. Additionally, methods have been developed for quality control measures aimed at reducing andor eliminating defects in fuel filtration equipment other than fuel filters and preventing ground support equipment from malfunctioning due to early detection of flaws.
