The purpose of this program was threefold to identify the mode of failure of the cable, to investigate means of improving the cable, and to establish operating procedures which would prevent future operational cable failures. The report presents the results of this testing program to date. The experimental set-up used to duplicate the cablewinch interface is discussed and the results of testing segments of the cable in this device are given. Laboratory failures closely resembling that experienced in field conditions are shown and a theoretical model of the observed failure mechanism is discussed. Modified author abstract
