Abstract:
A brief survey is made of the practical electrochemical applications of zirconia stabilized into a cubic fluorite lattice employing an alkaline - or rare-earth oxide additive. Stabilized zirconia has a high oxygen-ion conductivity and thus gaseous compounds containing oxygen can be electrochemically reduced forming oxygen ion at the cathode. A history of the development leading to the practical use of zirconia electrolytes in engineering devices is described including a recent proposition that it be used as a means of removing from combustion gases NO and NO2, NOx, the species responsible for photochemical smog. Also the possibility of employing zirconia for analyzing NOx as wellas other species in gaseous mixtures is suggested. Author
