Abstract:

The paper reviews the theory, experimental characteristics, and practical applications of weakly linked superconductors. The classical theoretical and experimental features of thin film Josephson junctions the simplest and most tractable example of weakly linked superconductors are examined. The primary concern is with the non-stationary Josephson effect, i.e. the AC Josephson effect of US parlance. Various other weakly linked structures such as point contacts and microbridges are examined. In addition, the possibility is raised of room temperature superconductivity based on the weak superconductivity concept. The use of weak links in devices for microwave generation and detection, magnetometers, and extremely sensitive voltmeters and ammeters is noted. Both Soviet and Western accomplishments in this field are reviewed. Author
