Abstract:

Systematic analysis of environmental effects requires preliminary descriptive studies of the environments and persons involved and their interrelationships as a prelude to definition of variables and measurement. This report summarizes personal observations made aboard several Navy ships and represents an effort to identify significant aspects of the shipboard environment that may influence health and job satisfaction. Some of these conditions appear to have unequal effects on different segments of the crew. An attempt is made to portray the life of the typical sailor aboard ship and to understand some of the unusual circumstances and stress that he encounters in this habitat. Author
