Abstract:
A unified theory is presented for the equilibrium self preserving shape of an ablative nose tip in a hypersonic flow. Purely laminar, purely turbulent, and partly laminar-partly turbulent boundary layers are considered. Blunt profiles and both blunt and slender profiles are deduced for the purely laminar and the purely turbulent boundary layer regimes, respectively. For cases where the nose tip boundary layer is partly laminar and partly turbulent, it is assumed that the scale of the laminar portion of the nose tip is defined by a known transition Reynolds number Ret. The resulting nose shape is blunt in the laminar region and slender in the turbulent region, and is called a laminar-slender turbulent profile. Modified author abstract
