The initial validation of a nonverbal, culture-fair battery of tests for predicting performance of Navy machinist mates is described. The battery is based on the concept that ability to learn a miniature and representative aspect of a job can serve as a predictor of ability to learn the job as a journeyman. The battery was administered to 50 black and 49 white recruits who were below the minimal acceptable score for admission to the machinist mate school training, as measured by the usual Navy written tests. These recruits were placed on the job and their level of competence was measured through work sample performance test methods nine months later. It was possible to acquire criterion data for 29 of the black and 25 of the white subjects.
