Abstract:

The report presents a long-term concept for performance assurance of the FAA air traffic control and navigation system. It defines the problems of assurance in the 1965-70 era and establishes goals for system design, system performance, and costs. A comparison of the capabilities and limitations of the present system with these goals leads to definition of the improvements needed. The long-term assurance concept involves over-all system design and operation electronic facility performance, reliability, maintenance, and repair air-derived performance measurement techniques operational and technical data requirements, and assurance management procedures. Volume I reports the results of the system analyses and the conclusions and recommendations drawn from them. Modified author abstract
