The AFAPL-MHD Facility KIVA-I was used to conduct an extensive series of tests on the pegwall diagonally connected generator. Extensive knowledge was gained in the areas of conductivity, oxygen-to-fuel ratios, interelectrode connection angles, seed particle geometry, and optimum loading conditions. A peak power of 210 KW was achieved. A DC-to-DC Inverter was successfully operated on the MHD generator, providing an output of 50 KW at 50 KV dc. Numerous modifications were made to the KIVA-I facility, including a new high-speed data acquisition system, a close circuit television system, a pulse-control network for the main burner, a new set of pole faces for the magnet, a digital display panel, and an instrumented copper electrode assembly.
