Abstract:

Shock tube experiments were performed to investigate the initial dust lofting process which occurs in a nuclear burst as the blast wave travels over the soil surface. The dust-density profile above the soil surface was determined by a light extinction technique for peak-shock overpressures ranging from 15 to 75 psi. High-speed motion picture films were used to record dust beads ranging from 1 mm to 3mm in diameter for shock overpressures of 15 to 90 psi. Author
