Abstract:
The essay briefly evaluates the strategic and economic significance of the Middle East and presents a view of Russian interests in this area. Various methods used by the U.S.S.R. to establish herself as an important power in the Middle East are examined. The necessity to reach a peaceful settlement in order to avoid a confrontation between the two super-powers is stressed. The U.S. must regain prestige and influence with the Arab nations in order to preserve peace in the area. An outline of a future U.S. policy to achieve these goals is presented. Author
