Abstract:
Section 1 of the report is the introduction. Section 2 deals with noise in ducts and cavities and includes a number of papers concerned with wind-tunnel noise. Probably the most original paper in this section is that by Swinbanks of Cambridge in which he shows that in principle the noise in a symmetric duct can be suppressed by an active arrangement of sound sources and a suitable control system. Section 3 deals with shear layers including free jets and shear layers formed downstream of a splitter plate with reference to the Kutta condition. This section includes a number of papers of direct aeronautical interest on both experiments and theory. Section 4 deals with sound production arising from the interaction of flows with moving surfaces. Finally sect 5 contains three papers rather loosely grouped under the heading of interaction of sound with turbulence.
