Abstract:

During the high explosive simulation testing and follow-on programs, it was determined that the aluminum canisters used for free-field media motion transducers had many discrepancies which limited the data and, thus, the canister usefulness. Therefore, a program was initiated to evaluate these canister designs and to propose changes or new designs the criteria being higher natural frequency, waterproof assembly, and improved canistersoil matching. In-house research produced the idea of a room temperature curing canister. After a thorough testing program, it was determined that the use of epoxy canisters was a breakthrough in the design of canisters for free-field ground motion transducers. This new design resulted in higher quality data at a greatly reduced cost. The testing program and fabrication techniques are discussed. Modified author abstract
