Abstract:
The thermal and mechanical properties of PGPyrolytic GraphiteSiC were determined as functions of temperature, 4500F, SiC concentration, to approximately 25 percent, and crystal orientation, a and c directions, of the PG phase. The material was found to be unique in that it is nearly isotropic with respect to thermal expansion and elastic modulus but still quite anisotropic with respect to thermal conductivity. The room temperature tensile strength was much greater than PG in the c direction, as expected as a result of the SiC crystal reinforcement. Tensile strength and elastic modulus were also greater than PG in the ab direction to up 4000F. The data must be considered to be preliminary and nonstatistical.
