Abstract:

One hundred fifteen paired sera from normal mothers venous blood and their newborn infants umbilical cord blood were examined for CF-antibodies against the Cytomegalovirus strain C-87. The results show that 49 of the mothers on the day of delivery possessed antibodies against cytomegalovirus with titres between 14 and 164. These antibodies were transferred to the newborn, either in identical 70 of the positive cases or in higher 27 and only in 3 in lower levels than in the corresponding maternal blood. These findings suggest that the maternal Cytomegalovirus CF-antibodies are not only subject to passive placental transfer but in approximately one third of the positive cases an active placental transport resulting in an elevated antibody concentration in the newborn occurs.
