The problems addressed under this contract can most easily be broken down into three groups. The first involves the determination of electronic structure of amorphous materials, e.g., density of states and optical selection rules. Here considerable emphasis was placed on the changes in electronic structure observed in going from the crystalline to amorphous forms of the materials and in comparison of the experimental results with theoretical predictions. The second part of the work emphasized the structural aspect of amorphous materials and the development and refinement of experimental and theoretical tools by which the structure can be determined. The third feature of this project was a study aimed at the problem of photoconductivity in the rather complex chalcogenide alloys. Experimentally, the approach was to study the measurement of dark current, photoconductivity, thermoelectric power and field effect. A theoretical model was developed for photoconductivity in these materials which is consistant with the experimental data.
