The photolysis of t-butyl nitrite in hydrocarbon solvents having abstractable hydrogen atoms results in the formation of t-butanol and solvent-derived nitroso dimer andor oxime. The quantum yield is higher in cyclohexene than in cyclohexane or cyclopentane. There are many side reactions, two of which are photochemical decomposition of nitroso dimer and the Bamberger reaction. Author
